Nuneaton’s hospital is named the UK’s best performing for breast cancer waiting times

Receiving the news that you or a loved one has breast cancer is always going to shocking, scary and daunting. However, we all know that the sooner a cancer like this is caught, the higher the chance of recovery. With this is mind, Nuneaton hospital should be extremely proud of their latest acknowledgment as the UK’s best performing hospital for breast cancer waiting times. The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust was the only trust in England where 100 per cent of patients saw a specialist within two weeks and had received treatment within 62 days.

This 100 per cent figure recorded in July proves the dedication of the trust’s hardworking staff. Chief Executive at the hospital, Glen Burley commented, ‘This achievement reflects the efforts of our dedicated hospital teams who are working extremely hard under huge pressure to care for our patients. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we remain fully open for business and urge women to attend their screening appointments and see their GP if they notice any breast changes.’

This achievement beats the NHS target which sets out that 93 per cent of people urgently referred by their GP for suspected breast cancer should see a specialist within 14 days and should then begin treatment within 62 days.

Whilst the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust has been named as the top performing, other hospitals in Coventry and Warwickshire also have minimal wait times and on average 98% saw a specialist and received treatment within the two week/two month target window, against beating the NHS target of 93%.

Whilst these statistics are outstanding and deserve recognition, it is worth being mindful that breast cancer can affect anyone and that we should all be regularly checking for any new lumps or bumps in our breast tissue. To reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, it is also recommended to maintain a healthy weight, be physically active, avoid high-calorie foods, limit your consumption of red and processed meat, avoid alcohol, limit your consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks, to enjoy more grains, veg, fruit and beans as well as breastfeeding babies for six months before adding other liquids and foods to their diets.
