Mountain rescue volunteer receives record-breaking donations after being severely injured Posted On 26 February 2021

Said injuries are said to have been life-changing, incurred by mountain rescuer Chris Lewis, as he helped a Leicester man who breached lockdown rules

60 year-old retired engineer, Chris Lewis, fell 150 metres after having slipped during his mission to rescue this law-breaker, after which his colleagues were called out to help the volunteer. The donations have wracked up to more than £800,000, with contributions from walking groups, other mountain rescue organisations, as well as individuals, some being from Leicester and Leicestershire. The donations are said to have been so generous for the mountain rescue volunteer because the man he was helping was breaking lockdown regulations by visiting the Lake District.

Lewis remains in intensive care as we speak, in Preston Hospital, as his life-changing injuries were of his spine whilst he also incurred facial fractures from the fall. Meanwhile, a fund-raising page has been set up by Lewis’ colleagues, for the sole benefit of his and his family, to help his recovery, with an original target of £500,000.

A Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team spokesman has said: “On behalf of Chris Lewis and his family, we’re immensely grateful for your exceptional generosity and the speed with which the initial target of £500,000 for the Chris Lewis Support Fund has been passed. It is a real indication of people’s understanding of Chris’s truly life-changing situation and the long-term clinical and care implications of his injuries.”

For legal reasons, the two men who were rescued are not being named by the authorities, but were each fined £200 for making the trip to Lake District in breach of the government rules designed to try to stop the spread of Covid-19.
